HELPING GIRLS AND WOMEN LIVE THEIR BEST LIVES THROUGHOUT THIER LIVES!

LITTLE FREE LIBRARIES

We now host four Little Free Libraries at preschool and community sites.  We keep these libraries stocked with pre-K books—many donated from our members and guests at our Branch Meetings and Book Review Breakfasts.

GIRLS ON THE RUN OF THE TREASURE COAST

A physical-activity-based positive development program for 3rd-8th grade girls.  The program teaches life skills and self-esteem and culminates in a celebratory 5k run.  We give scholarships to girls who could not otherwise pay full tuition.

BIG BROTHERS/BIG SISTERS YOUTH TUTORING SINCE 2009

Members mentor/tutor elementary school children in reading and other subjects.

AAUW FLORIDA TECH TREK CAMP SINCE 2013

We contribute annually to Tech Trek, a weeklong STEM camp for seventh-grade girls in Florida.

INDIAN RIVER REGIONAL SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING FAIR SINCE 2011

Members judge science projects at this annual event.  To encourage girls in STEM, our branch provides two $ 50 awards to girls who show promising scientific potential.

STEM CAMP FOR GIRLS

The Treasure Coast Girls' Coalition applied for and received a Community Action Grant from AAUW National with AAUW Vero Beach as their sponsor! It will support local middle school girls attending STEM camp in summer 2022. They will specialize in digital literacy, emotional intelligence, and environmental learning at the Archie Carr National Wildlife Refuge.

HIGH SCHOOL TO COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIPS

High school girls from VBHS, SRHS, and IRCHS, who have achieved academic excellence, demonstrated leadership potential in high school, and have financial need, can apply for scholarship funds.

SCHOLARSHIPS FOR INDIAN RIVER STATE COLLEGE WOMEN CONTINUING FROM AA TO BA SINCE 1971

Each year the branch awards $1,200 scholarships to female AA recipients who are continuing their education towards a Bachelor’s degree. In addition, we have an endowed scholarship of $500 annually.  The IRSC Foundation administers these scholarships.

IRSC STUDENT CLUB

Hosting a student club at IRSC is our way of helping college women focus on issues of interest, learn advocacy, and develop salary negotiation skills. Through our StartSmart program, they will learn how to research their target salary, highlight their accomplishments, and develop the confidence to negotiate for better benefits and pay.

STIPENDS FOR LPN STUDENTS THROUGH THE ECONOMIC OPPORTUNITY COUNCIL OF INDIAN RIVER COUNTY

Since 2018, we have supported women in intensive LPN or RN programs, after they complete the REACH program at the Economic Opportunity Council.

START SMART AND WORK SMART SALARY NEGOTIATIONS

Young women starting into the workforce and those with more experience learn how to research their target salary, highlight their accomplishments and develop the confidence to negotiate for better benefits and pay.   Courses are online without cost:  https://courses.aauw.org/learn

FEIBEL AND MACPHAIL/STRONG ENDOWMENTS FOR CAREER DEVELOPMENT RESEARCH

AAUW in Washington, DC administers these endowments, which were initiated by and named for two early presidents of AAUW Vero Beach.  Each year grants are awarded for post-graduate research or projects or career development grants.

AAUW GREATEST NEEDS FUND

From AAUW in Washington, this fund supports important initiatives for women and girls.

VOLUNTEERING

Literacy tutoring with Literacy Services of Indian River County, since 2012 – Members tutor adult learners one-to-one in reading or English as a Second Language.

Gifford Community Cultural and Resource Center – Programs for girls in leadership, personal development, art, music, history, and film.

CONTINUING EDUCATION

AAUW Vero Beach hosts several continuing education events. All meetings are open to the public.

Book Review Breakfasts, since 1986

We are most well-known for these monthly events from November through March, in which a speaker from the community chooses a book she/he is passionate about and presents it to our members and guests.  These are always inspiring events.

Branch Meetings, since 1964

Often held at a local restaurant, these meetings have speakers of interest from the community from whom we always learn.
